Unit 10 scripts

the short scripts we discussed are by Steve Hevey; please look him up, particularly the soho shorts reviews.

Notes from the readings.

General notes; try to skim forward so you can anticipate the lines and responses.
baggage:

you need to practice sight reading; establish space and vary the pace. You might also have asked for some time to skim through the script to get an idea of character for bolder acting decisions
Gwen; in naturalistic phonecall, give time to other person's speech
Get off the page to interact with each other; a casting director would want to see how you work off each other.
you chose to perform in the round but ignored at least 1 quarter of the audience throughout.
Radley; well done on holding grapes throughout!
you established 'mum' later on in the scene and this helped immensely with setting the scene.
Blade; where is the food you went to get? you didn't come in with it.
reading got much better towards the end; remember however you might not get all of that time in an audition setting.
make stronger decisions; where was sandwich; why didn't you eat it?

Coming up

george, we have not seen your eyes for the first few minutes; look up, interact with scene partner and the environment
alex, pay more attention to what your eyes are doing; some rolling, fast blinking; you aware of it?
you both talk about the dressing gown but have not referenced it; show us what it is like to wear; to look at your father in it.
static staging; move to change pace and mood.
make space for a moment; some silence and interaction!
yiannis who is on the phone? what are you listening to?
george, off the page!
yiannis, you put the shoes in your pocket!

Every bit of your love

radley; good establishing of new character.
Yiannis, much better once started again; start boldly next time; they wont always stop you and say engage!
good bringing out of the humour; again, create silences more confidently
yiannis, try skim the paragraph so you get the pacing and expression right so you don't waste lines.
catia, try holding the script further down so it does not hide your face.
stay committed to the ending!
If it says kiss, kiss. commitment is key.

Dark Matter

paige i cannot see you, hair is in your face and you're looking away
doesn't look like a sofa the way you're sitting on it.
great silent moment of eye contact.
paige if you laugh, use it for script. don't lose focus.
commit to the actions as much as the words.
lost commitment in the ending and this affected the whole piece.

Millenium

stage directions could be interesting too! set out the space for us visually. don't just describe and then ignore it.
george; the monologue in the beginning really affective but you did not look out once!
strong choices Antonio but caretake your diction.
george, stay in character.
gwen, more precision with miming drinks etc. Also, ground your voice further so you can control range more.

Monologue

samantha good engagement with audience but you are looking out rather than us. who are you addresssing? take more time with text.
some strong visual memories described there, but you are rushing and not allowing us to see them.
sophie, script is hiding your face.
good controlled ending..

some ideas for the staging.

what if we followed the dressing gown from one play to the other?
what is the millenium sounds end each run with fireworks etc?
.

1 comment:

  1. I like the idea of using a dressing gown in every play as long as it doesn't become a focal point and distract from each play. Can it be subtly used? and it would have to signify something to relate to all the plays. A dressing gown is also used in Steven Hevey's play 'In My Name' so perhaps it is just something Hevey likes to add in to his plays.

Can the millenium sounds be recorded sounds from a night out somewhere? or mix recorded voices and sounds of fireworks, music etc. I once wrote a script that started in a Sex Pistols gig interrupted by a police raid so I mixed a Sex Pistols track with 70's sirens and riot sounds. The tracks can be easily mixed on Audacity to sound authentic. I would be happy to do this if no one else.
