devised group ideas?
I haven't been here a while and as I've missed what's been happening this week, I'm out of the loop for now and don't know the direction that's been taken but after reading Catia's stories it gave me some ideas so here is a true story about debt:
I was in debt £18,000 but only earning £5.55ph. The debt came from an injury working in a factory.
I worked hard and gave my all but didn't realise the damage I was doing to myself as it was gradual over a long period of time.
When I finally realised how severe my injury was I sought medical attention and from there financial compensation as I found out that my injuries were permanent.
At the time of my injury RSI was becoming well known and many people were claiming compensation for it.
Medical specialists were scared to diagnose injuries caused by work duties and so my case dropped after being told that my injuries were caused by everyday household chores like washing up!!
6 months off work with no income, my debts mounted up until I returned to work on light duties and took notice of the constant Tv ads to "CONSOLIDATE YOUR LOANS INTO ONE".
It seemed like a sensible idea to have just one monthly repayment as I couldn't afford multiple monthly payments with high interest.
So I found a £10,000 loan with the lowest rate of interest and proceeded to pay all my debts and with some money left over I'd have myself a nice holiday to recharge my batteries after a very stressful year...
However, when I tried to pay off each debt I was shocked to find that administration charges and heavy interest was added to each balance.
Eventually I didn't have enough money to pay all the debts and was finally left with not only the large loan to repay but other smaller ones too.
The easiest option that people recommended was to go bankrupt. Instead, I took all the overtime available at work and paid as much as I could towards my huge debt.
I found higher paid jobs that offered more overtime which resulted in working ilegal hours of 100+ per week.
My social life disappeared as I constantly worked. It seemed as if I'd never pay back the loans but I did eventually. It took about 7 years.
I've often wondered if I made the right choice. People often take the easy option of going bankrupt, they've spent out on fast cars, fast food and holidays but don't like the bank balance afterwards.
Everytime bankruptcy occurs, other people have to pay for it.
Insurance premiums go up. Although my thought was "why should other people pay my debts?", I should have received compensation for my work injury which would have paid my debts and would have been paid out by the insurance company therefore other people would still have to pay higher premiums.
The outcome of the circumstances:
I lost 7 years of living and live with a permanent injury which affects my day to day living but
I have pride and respect for paying back the debts that I incurred and so my credit record is clean.
We all affect each other and don't even realise half the time and...
THE FACTORY OWES ME!!!
I have also tried to think of lighter humorous ideas:
What do you get if you cross an angry Queen with a bank manager- A bunch of fives!
I was arrested earlier. I bought a goat, thought it would save me some money on milk and cheese. Well, it was only a baby, it thought I was it's Mother and it fell asleep on me. I was done for kidnapping!
Sorry, humour isn't my strongest area but I try!

Hello All,
Just to let you know that whilst I am VERY excited to see the work you are preparing for Thursday ( WooHoo!), I am less than impressed with attendance - this week ( first week back after half term) so far as a year group you have clocked in at 70% on Monday and 78% at start of play on Tuesday.
You are training professionals, and we spend money to bring in people to give you techniques classes which feed DIRECTLY into your practice. You could see that money indirectly as yours in that you pay course fees to be here....
When you don't attend, ( unless through genuine illness which you have contacted us about) , you send a message to us and to visiting lecturers, that you are not really that serious about your chosen career.
Many graduates, industry professionals and jobbing actors comment to us that the freedom to work and train in a space is what they miss most about the time they had at college.
Please sort yourselves out as a year group - you are capable of so much.

New Scratch Night
Dear Friends,
The Works is a new event, which offers a scratch platform for artists to present innovative short excerpts of work-in-progress at the Brighton Dome Studio Theatre on Tues 9 April. We are currently looking for artists with a particular focus on cross-art form and interdisciplinary exploration within theatre, dance and music to take part. Applications are encouraged from both emerging and established artists.
4-6 applicants will be selected by members of the Dome's programming team to present short 10-15 minute excerpts of work in development. The artists will have the opportunity to work in the Studio for one rehearsal session in preparation for the presentation, with technical support from the Dome. As part of the presentation on 9 Apr, constructive feedback from the audience can be sought if useful to each artist.
The deadline for applications is March 1st and full details can be found here along with a link to the brief application form http://brightondome.org/event/ 2496/the_works/
Please help us spread the word about this opportunity by circulating it to any artists you think may be interested in applying. Also we would encourage you to come along and attend the evening – which is free admission (pre-booking required).
With best wishes,
Rosie

Hey, I'm sorry i haven't been in this past few days but the flu virus left me feeling really poorly. I've spoken to Bronya and she has updated me on everything that's been happening, and sent me a few thing for me to research so I can give some help towards creating the show while stuck at home bored. Please let me know if you guys need anything and i'll be more than happy to help.

Feedback from claire raftery for Broken Mirror
Having spoken to group at end of day, it became clear that they are describing piece as 3 separate unrelated scenes making one show- but really there are clearly 2-3 different shows here which need different devised groups. They may find it more positive to stop working as one large devising group with a director/writer trying to bring it all together & split into:
A directed/devised group who want to pursue theme of debt/debt collection led by writer/director
A devised group who want to look at Kaufman and happenings/affecting and subverting audience expectations - start by what is a debt collector? How would Kaufman take this character/situation and develop happenings with the audience? What kind of TV show would Kaufman put on with debt as the penalty/gift?!
And don't try to marry the two ideas at present as it seems like many of the group members are losing enthusiasm/not voicing any opinion or ideas and this is making the group rather dispirited and unproductive.
Although as a deviser you do need to compromise, it can't be at the expense of having any enthusiasm for the work you are making or being made voiceless.
Hope that helps!

Devised Group Notice - Blurb & Concept
Hello all
Following the feedback yesterday, there appears to be a group consensus that the concept for the show needs another overhaul. I've pitched an idea to Vanessa today; my apologies for not consulting the rest of you, but Vanessa has been insistent on coming up with something today as it is also the blurb deadline.
Here is the concept; the performing space, inc. audience space, is divided into three sections where a short mini-play lasting approx. 15 mins will take place with a small group of actors in each section. Each performance will be about the theme of debt, owing something to someone else but it's doesn't need to be financial debt; it could emotional owning something, owing a life, etc.
The groups would be as follows:
1) Bronya/Blade & Catia
2) George, Nicole & Paige
3) Gwen & Sophie
Radley would be a roaming character appearing in each mini-play as a recurring character - The Debt Collector; the being of order that all debts are paid. You'll all have the weekend to come up and get together to work out what narratives you want to show in each mini-play, which can be pitched and shown to Shaun, Vanessa and myself on Tuesday.
In the meantime, we now to come up with a blurb for the revised version of the show. Shaun and I are in college all day, working with Vanessa to try and get a blurb written. If anyone has any concerns or ideas for the blurb, then please come in to help us. It has to be completed today.
Thank you all very much.
