Ropetackle

Hello all,
hope industry day was helpful. Here is summary of Au bout de souffle which i'm watching over the weekend. Please make sure you all watch it, we have 3 days to come up with something for the Ropetackle.
Here is summary
Michel Poiccard, an irresponsible socio-path and small-time thief, steals a car and impulsively murders the motorcycle policeman who pursues him. Now wanted by the authorities, he renews his relationship with Patricia Franchini, a hip American girl studying journalism at the Sorbonne, whom he had met in Nice a few weeks earlier. Before leaving Paris, he plans to collect a debt from an underworld acquaintance and expects her to accompany him on his planned getaway to Italy. Even with his face in the local papers and media, Poiccard seems oblivious to the dragnet that is slowly closing around him as he recklessly pursues his love of American movies and libidinous interest in the beautiful American.

Your unit 8 TUTORIALS have been moved to the Tuesday morning with Dan Ford. When not in tutorials, the rest of the group working on the Ropetackle project and planning the skills swap workshops for Friday.

Have a great break and please keep posting about venues and the festival, film acting, ideas for the newest project.

Film Acting unit

I have enjoyed this unit more than others, simply because it has more involvement- I feel, with what I want to do in the industry after I finish my degree. I have learnt so much and know I will carry this information with me into my career as I believe it has helped a great deal. Learning the scripts and monologues was fun for me as I do enjoy learning lines, and challenging myself, especially with having one evening to learn a monologue. I feel I took on this challenge and look forward to having to do so in my career in the future.

I also feel it has focused the group more, and as George said added passion back into the class with doing what we love. Everyone has had good involvement with the classes, and I feel others enjoyed it as much as myself. We rose to the challenges Joe gave us, and I am very proud of the class as a whole. WELL DONE GUYS! :)

I have progressed and improved as the weeks have gone on, and enjoy being given direction and trying a scene in new ways. I loved working with the camera, as they don't phase me too much, love the limelight! It was great to learn all the camera tricks of how to hold your body and head when on camera. Also tips about how the casting directors and assistants can act in a casting and with practising this in our mock auditions it will help us prepare for things to come in the future. I have found things that I personally do when acting and am now learning how to either widen my range and learn more ways to expand on things I do, but I have also learnt I need to up my physicality more when doing a more exciting and demanding speech. The direction and notes I received were brilliant and so helpful! All things I have taken on board, made notes on and made sure I will remember, as this unit has helped with a great deal, with not only understanding screen acting, but also tips, tricks and methods to take into the industry with me, with auditions and work.
Great opportunity to think about your Scratch Night at the Basement

Film Acting

I'm finding the film acting sessions with Joe extremely helpful, though not just for film, but for all kinds of acting. I have learnt the thought processes to begin applying choices as an actor regarding how the character feels during a speech. Without wanting to self evaluate too much, I do feel like I now understand how to intelligently deconstruct a script/screenplay/monologue and be able to talk about it freely and justify an opinion or a choice.

Also, I feel it has bought out the passion that we all have in the group for characters and their feelings, but ultimately for stories themselves, whether they be told via film, theatre, television etc.. Lastly, I think it's really helped the group in a more social way, not just by increasing our technical knowledge of character work, but by engaging us in deep discussions about characters of our own back, which is valuable to us as a group.

Hi, please can someone tell me where to get the info about the sonnets. Lisa said there was info but I can't find it anywhere and I know nothing about it! It's not on here and can't find it on blackboard. Thanks in advance!

Shoreham Ropetackle Project

Hello all,
for those that were late, a reminder that as a group we agreed to commit to a project that was offered to us. The Ropetackle in shoreham is starting film nights and they have invited us to contribute to the film showing of Au bout de souffle on Thursday 8th November in the evening. We need to watch the film asap and respond with some ideas using live performance, film, sound....
I have not been able to get a copy of the film for you all to watch so help needed with that please.
The week after half term is also skills swap week and beginning of unit 7 so please be prepared to be very busy.
Those two weeks fridays are days in college so please book time off work if you need to as you need to swap skills on the first Friday and then present Transmedia ideas on the second.
Can anyone get a hold of the dvd (also titled Breathless) or legally download?
Thanks
Vanessa

Festival!

Hello all, good meeting today and some exciting decisions. Please remember that the freedom of choice is not easy but is exciting. Now focusing on venues and booking them before we make decisions on registering and 'blurbing'.

I have lots of new scripts at Durrington so please come and see me and have a look. Once logistics are less of a worry we can start talking and dreaming up more artistic scenarios and ideas.

You can soon relax from this for a while and focus on the other projects.

In the meantime please remember that you are expected to be reading, thinking, evaluating and blogging on film acting experiences, reading and evaluations. Your assessments for unit 6 are next week so please make sure you are reflecting on film acting (and blogging) as well as the festival project.
Also, a reminder that as is on your timetable, next Friday is industry morning and i have exciting guests lined up for you that you can talk to about the festival specifically in the breakout session. One of the guests is Tim Harrison, development director of the Basement.

See you all tomorrow.

proposal

Hello all, i hope your meeting was productive.
Taz, from the third year ba, presented a devising workshop today that i think would be a great start for your scratch or festival project. He offered to run it for an hour after your unit 8 session.
Discussing ideas as you well know is ok, playing with ideas on your feet, much better.
Please update here for me and absentees on where you are at the moment with it. I have budgets now so we can discuss this when we next meet.
Have a great weekend

Todays venues report and much more

hey guys so me and Antonio, went out again to find venues and came to a conclusion about the venues. Most of the venues we have seen are very small which is not ideal for a fringe performance. it would be very cramped and would not create a good atmosphere for the audience, plus the lay out of the space we have seen doesn't look very artuadian and would most likely confuse the audience right from the start. Now the way we are going with the theme of the play, me and Antonio both agreed that 'The Basement' or 'the Nightingale' would make more sense to use as a venue for the Fringe just cause the way its designed kind of feels artoudian anyway. and would create a better atmosphere plus more sense for the audience. i have spoken to Vanessa and she has said to me that she has proposed the basement but has not booked it properly, so we can still put this as an option for the fringe. we will speak more when we next speak.

today we went to the kemedia, the main space is not for hire just cause there is regular shows throughout the year. however the studio in the basement is for hire. however in terms of prices they were just making the figure and couldn't give use a price, all we know is that the pricing is going up. however last year their prices were around £100 - £210 for 2 1/2 hours. this includes technical support which includes sound and lighting which is pretty good. however if we were going to use this we would need to be very strict on getting to the space on time and do not mess around. but good news is that they will be willing to negotiate on lowering the price if it is not on the main slots which usually is around 5 pm to 1:30 am (remember this was last year everything is changing for the new year.) I don't know about how many shows we want to do but if we wanted to have two shows then we will need to pay for more, but the price will drop by 50% for the next 2 1/2 hours. STRESSING THE POINT! now don't jump the gun on this they already have had proposals for that space so if you guys want to use this for the our performance we need to make a proposal good enough for them to give us the space. The slotted time will also be given to use by random cause they have to compensate for other performances.

now in terms on the actually stage there is a platform stage, a lighting desk with sound equipment. the chairs can probably be moved but we might need to check with them. as an idea i think this would be great to have some sought of jazzy club with gangsters and bring a classy style to it just cause it came to my mind when i walked, (sorry for the poor explanation i'm very tired). maybe make this a scripted play. as the theme which every is stuck on i think it just would work here. personally it would make more sense to go for a different theme.

One last thing, Guys please keep thinking of ideas for themes and styles of how we can make a piece of theatre. The idea we have is great but Just One Idea for me isn't good enough to be honest. to me it kind of seems Student and were not students anymore we are a THEATRE COMPANY. i have being in productions where we had 15 ideas for a play.   if you have sat to listen to other actors after there devised performances, when asked what ideas they came up with before they even began to devise. i always hear the same thing they bounced idea after idea around until they came up with something to genuine. don't be lazy and stick with one idea, cause i don't to be looking back and regret not trying a few ideas that could of made an even greater play.

WE HAVE TIME TO THINK OF IDEAS FOR A DEVISED AND SCRIPTED PLAY!!! IF WE RUSH IN, KEEP TO JUST ONE IDEA AND NOT LOOK AT ANY ALTERNATIVES FOR AN IDEA FOR A PLAY WE PROBABLY LOOK BACK WITH A LITTLE SENSE OF REGRET. WERE A SMART BUNCH OF PROFESSIONAL ACTORS LETS ACT LIKE THEM!

food for thought

the venues so far

hi guys well so far me and Antonio have been going out to Brighton searching for venues. so far we have gone to mainly pubs and bars for some reason anything that isn't a pub is shut, Weird. anyway here is some of the pictures that we took so you get ideas flowing.

sorry you guys this blog put the pictures on random cannot help it.

Also in terms of hiring the venues most of them we will have to scheduled a meeting with them to get  the prices (however some venues will let us use their space for free but we need to make the admission free as well) and what we could do to there space in terms of staging. second thing is that most of the venues i have seen the space is very small so if we were to pick them remember to think of the space.

this is still a work in prgoess there is gonna be much more pictures late on this week me an antonio are dedicated to this so hopefully we can get a lot done this week

Just a small message...

Hey, just to let everyone know that I have found a website (if you haven't found on already!) that has movie scripts on it for Joe's assignment. It's www.imsdb.com
That's all :)

So far...

So far, what I've liked is the way it feels as a group! This year, we all get on just the same as last year but there seems more of a need to be professional all the time!

The film studies from joe has been informative and has instilled a want to know more about every aspect of our field!

Lastly regarding unit 9, the group ethic is really strong I think and I'm thoroughly looking forward to it! I will bring all the various booklets that I have in on Monday and we'll see if that helps. Thanks Yiannis and antonio for going to look at venues, look forward to seeing what you've found out!

workshop

Hello all, thank you for attending today and i hope it was helpful for unit 8.
Ryan Etherington, third year actor asked me to invite you tomorrow to his film acting workshop.
If you are free, come along to the durrington campus for 10am for a couple of hours.
His project is film making and he will be looking at interpreting film scripts using specific performer techniques.
Thanks

Homework

For those absent today, we will fill you in tomorrow in detail but we were given the task of finding a 1-3 minute monologue preferably from an unknown film or a film you haven't seen to perform in a style that you would play for the role. Joe asked if we could be off the book by Tuesday but if not, have the script in hand. Good luck!

Storytelling

Yes another interesting day where I learnt a lot. The main point that has stuck with me is storytelling. I told Joe that I have difficulty getting info from my brain to my mouth and when I tell a story I sidetract although managing to keep listeners, at the end I usually hear "is that it? where's the punchline?". Joe said people lose interest in irrelevant information or detail. Before telling a story, always think first 'what is the point?' Cut the waffle and get to the chase.

This leads on to the next thing that the film industry is quite harsh in the way that Directors and Casting Directors etc are not interested in anything that won't serve a purpose to the film. Time is money. They don't want to hear long explanations or irrelevant information about yourself.

Would you like me to expand further??

Film acting experience

I have gained so much experience today and yesterday. I know a lot more about film and its terminolgy, I have been made aware that I should know more about directors. I have planned a system to list all the films I have watched (ones that I can remember!) and find out the directors and look at their other pieces. Look at any patterns or things in common within those films.
I like being thrown into the deep end, with in reason though. Today's screen play reading was very educational indeed and puts tiny amounts of pressure on us,  but in a positive way because that is what the industry can be like :)
I'm looking forward to more film acting next week, especially a film monologue from unknown films, and preferably something that we wouldnt normally choose or consider.
If these first couple of weeks are what the second year is all about, then I am going to love it and wish that it will never end because that means I nae to think about my future!

film acting

Hello all, hope you had a good day. Please post what today was about and what you need to prepare for next week for those who were absent today.
thanks
vanessa

Tuesday, 2 October 2012

Hello all, hope you enjoyed today. Well done again for a very generous and well run joined workshop last week.
I also really enjoyed your films.
Can we start using blog again to document, reflect, challenge and update?
What are you learning about film acting?
Also, fringe 2013 http://brightonfringe.org/participants/2013
Get on it fast before we lose good venues and opportunities.
You have the afternoon this Thursday after the HE research conference to discuss and come up with ideas and a plan. The brighton festival site gives really good advice. You might also talk to the musical theatre students and tutors who might also be part of the fringe.
Please see me about any concerns; i will be available for tutorials on thursdays from next week, or email/find me for a chat.
